Have you ever considered the little ring pull on your favourite beverage's can could be useful?
Dungog Historic Motor club has been saving and collecting donations of ring pulls for the past 10 years.
The club's treasurer Ronda Tyne co-ordinates the collection and cashes them in at One Steel.
The proceeds are then used to help buy equipment for the Dungog Shire Palliative Care Volunteers (DSPCV).
The Dungog Historic Motor Club recently presented two non-contact infrared thermometers to Dungog Shire Palliative Care Volunteers.
Mrs Tyne coordinates the collection of the ring pulls - with them coming in from the local community and contacts in other areas including Taree, Gunnedah, Kempsey and as far as Muckadilla in Queensland.
Donations are always welcome at 24 Moore Street, Dungog.
Rather than throwing them away your ring pulls can support the community.
Collect a container full and just leave at Ronda's front door.
"Since 2011 the Historic Motor Club has donated two fold-up wheel chairs, two barometric chairs, a shower stool, a monkey bar for a bed, an over the bath board and most recently the two non contact infrared thermometers which are invaluable in our current COVID times," said Lyn Moseley from DSPCV.
"All financed through ring pulls collection!"
The motor club is one of a number of community groups supporting Dungog Shire Palliative Care Volunteers.
Paterson Allyn Garden Group (PAGG) was formed more than 10 years ago and has more than 100 members who meet each month at a garden, most commonly in the Dungog Shire.
The group has three horticulturalists and focuses on increasing knowledge of gardening, sharing garden successes and failures and providing a learning experience for its members.
The club is also always looking at ways to provide support to others.
During the drought PAGG members raised money which was donated to CWA to assist farming communities.
This year, members of PAGG decided to support a local project by raising money for Dungog Shire Palliative Care Volunteers.
After consultation with the committee of Dungog Shire Palliative Care, PAGG members decided to purchase an Inogen One G4 Oxygen Concentrator with 4 Cell Battery costing $4,750 to add to the group's loan equipment.
Earlier this month PAGG Committee members presented Dungog Shire Palliative Care with $2500 towards this project.
With ongoing support from PAGG members over the next 12 months members plan to raise the remainder. Raising money will be through plant sales, morning tea donations and Christmas tree donations at monthly meetings.
"The concentrator can by used by DSPC clients who require oxygen during transports, outings and in their homes," Mrs Moseley said.
"It is compact, lightweight and can safely and legally be used in a vehicle, whereas normal oxygen cylinders are very heavy and are dangerous and illegal to use in a vehicle.
Dungog Shire Palliative Care Volunteers provide free, supported transport to treatments and doctor appointments, equipment and linen (all following COVID guidelines) to anyone in Dungog Shire with a life limiting illness.
Free respite is also provided (but not during our current COVID situation).
