RSPCA shelters are at a whopping 115% capacity for felines across the state and as a result the organisation is reducing adoption fees in an effort to find forever homes - and the Rutherford shelter is no exception.

RSPCA NSW's Hunter Shelter at Rutherford is over capacity, with over 160 cats there alone.
Just over 50 cats and kittens are available for adoption. The rest must remain in care until they are made available for adoption.
28% are stray/impound cats (the shelter operates as an impound facility for Hunter councils and high intake periods drastically put pressure on the shelter).
A total of 39% of these felines are undergoing processing (undergoing vet checks, awaiting surgery, under vet care/quarantine) and 32% are available for adoption.
Until April 25 adult cats over six months have been reduced from $180 to $100 and kittens from $230 to $150.
Over 660 cats and kittens are currently in care across the State, with only around 160 available for adoption at this time. The remaining cats and kittens are undergoing processing procedures such as vet checks, surgery and desexing procedures, or rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, the shelters continue to see high numbers of cats coming into care through Inspectorate operations, strays and impound and emergency boarding.
All adoptions include desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, vet checks and up-to-date parasite control. While the adoption fees do not cover the cost of the procedures and treatments, it is the best welfare outcome for the animals that we reduce their shelter stay times and find them homes.
