The verandah of Chillibillies Cafe becomes centre stage for performers once a month from 11am until 2pm.
One of the performers, songwriter Hugh Merrell, said there’s an appreciative crowd who gathers to hear the musicians play a mix of folk music, banjo, harmonica and guitar.
“We’ve been doing it for around 18 months now and people kind of like it,” he said.
“We’d love to see more local musicians involved.
“As well as the three to four regular performers we book, we have two open mike spots available so anyone can get up and perform.
“It’s a great way to get some experience playing to an audience and it’s a nice introduction for new musicians.”
Hugh’s aim is to see Dowling Street lined with street performers during the Dungog Festival on the October long weekend.
“If I had my way I’d like to see music at every cafe,” he said.
“The plan for the festival is for music to be along the street, probably a stage at the Visitor’s Centre.
“We will try and balance the sounds with pockets of performers so it all blends seamlessly and adds to the atmosphere of the festival.”
Musicians interested in performing at the monthly street music event at Chillbillies or wanting information about performing or busking the Dungog Festival can contact Hugh on 0458 417 160.
