Eight students of the Certificate III in Individual Support (Age Care) and their friends and families attended the night on November 30 which included an exchange of gifts, a lively Powerpoint of memorable moments, and even a few tears.
The students thanked their trainer Dianne Martell and coordinator Tina Fitchett from WEA Hunter for what turned out to be Dianne’s “retirement” class. Dianne nearly didn’t take the job.
“When Tina asked me to train in Dungog I told her I’d stopped, but I’m so glad she twisted my arm,” she said.
“It really has been a wonderful group to finish on.”
The cohort of students trained at the Doug Walters Pavilion and became cohesive very quickly.
“Cakes, scones and lately pizzas became a big part of the experience,” Dianne said.
“We love running age care courses because the chances of getting jobs is high,” said College Coordinator John O’Brien.
“Some students get offered work even while they’re doing their work placement.
“We’re negotiating with WEA Hunter to run another next year, hopefully starting in March.
“We’d love people to contact Dungog Community College and get on the list.”
Students completed work placement across the Hunter Valley including at Lara Aged Care who placed six students.
Four of the eight students also completed the Disability certificate along the way.
