SMYTHESDALE will be part of a Central Highlands Football League interleague encounter for the first time in 2015. Stephen Frys is set to serve as one of CHFL coach Greg Middleton’s assistants during game day in the clash against Horsham District on May 23. Frys, who took over the Smythesdale senior coaching job mid-way through last season, will join Bungaree’s Heath Boyd – who will look after rotations – as off-field leaders. Middleton will also appoint three on-field playing assistants to look after defensive, midfield and forward lines. Middleton told The Courier it was his aim to involve as many of the league’s 18 clubs in the interleague program as possible and he was pleased Frys had taken up the offer. “I didn’t know if he would or not, but I’m glad that he has, for sure. It’s good to involve someone from that club,” Middleton said. “He’s another set of eyes, basically.” Middleton is this year taking a more direct approach to the interleague selection process, which will see the preferred players sent letters, asking for their involvement in the program. This is different to past years, where a hefty squad has been trimmed before a final team confirmed. Once players have accepted invitations, Middleton said emails would then be sent, outlining their roles and expectations before the first training session. “They should know what is expected of them from the coaching staff two weeks before they even roll out,” Middleton said. Middleton expected to have between six to 10 players making their CHFL interleague debut in the clash against the Horsham District league. The match will be played at Horsham’s City Oval and is part of an interleague double-header, with the Wimmera and Bellarine competitions also doing battle at the ground later in the day. tim.oconnor@fairfaxmedia.com.au
