Reconciliation Dungog has launched their yes campaign

Reconciliation Dungog launched it's "Yes" campaign earlier in the year, and the group's spokesperson Jenny Akers said it was now time for politicians to take a backseat.

However, concerns have been raised by the Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie who said that he had "grave concerns about parts of this bill".

"I can't support the question that is being put, because of some existential problems," he said during a speech he gave to parliament.

"What is proposed in this has gone much further than that simple act of recognising that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were the first peoples who inhabited this continent."

Dr Gillespie said he believe that the wording of the referendum question was too broad and that it may represent a transfer of powers from Parliament to the High Court which is not democratically elected.

However, Ms Akers believes that the politicians' opinions aren't particularly relevant anymore as now every Australian is left to make up their mind on their own.

"Aboriginal people are allowed to have any opinions they want, if they want to say no that's fine. If they want to say yes that's fine... The politicians now have finished their usefulness," Ms Akers said.

Reconciliation Dungog's Yes campaign was soft launched earlier this year with the distribution of yes pamphlets but now the organisation is beginning to ramp up their efforts with their Kitchen Table Conversations program.

This program invites anyone from the Dungog community to join a conversation about the referendum in a casual and low-key environment in order to make an informed decision on the day of voting.
