However, a huge win in the men's game and a draw and a try to Jeremy's wife Elizabeth in the Ladies League Tag made the annual game to mark three years since Jeremy's death even more special.
Cobras coach James Foot said the annual Jeremy's Day match was a special day for the club, in particular for those who had played with Papamau and knew him from his time with the club.
"Jeremy's wife Liz and the kids continue to be a special part of club and it was fantastic for Liz to score a try in the girls' 10-all draw with Stockton," Foot said.
"The boys did their bit with a big win. We put on 90 points which as a fantastic effort by the whole team.
"It was also Scott Batey's 100th game for the club. He started with the club 19 years ago and has moved around so it took a while to clock up.
"It the was the annual ball after the games as well so it was a big day for the club."
The Cobras' 90-8 win against Maitland United was their most emphatic performance all season.
"We just never gave them any ball in the first half," Foot said. "They were starved of possession and we just kept piling on the tries. We led 50-0 at half-time ... definitely our best half of footy all year."
It wasn't a bad second half as well with the Cobras keeping the scoreboard ticking over with another 40 points while conceding just two unconverted tries.
"It was pleasing that we maintained the pressure, it's a very good sign going forward," Foot said.
Trei Brekelmans received the Jeremy Papamau award for player of the match and also won the best back award. Phil Badior was best forward, Cal Gorman best bench player and players' player went to Jarrod Marks.
The Cobras have this weekend off and are away to Paterson on July 13.
Clarence Town Ladies League Tag team had a hard-fought draw against Stocktown Devils, a side who beat them by 72 points in their first encounter.
"It's a pretty amazing turn around by the girls and we should be proud of how far we've progressed," Cobras captain Ellen Maytom said.
For the first time this season the Cobras opened the scoring with April Taleski-Williams sidestepping the Devils line and racing to the line for a try.
Unfortunately, she wasn't able to convert her shot.
Soon after Liz Papamau crossed for the Cobras' second, and when Grace Miller converted they led 10-0.
Shortland reduced the margin to 10-4 shortly before the break, but in the battle of defences the Cobras were holding sway.
Miller and Emily Fotunaso were having fine games and the Cobras could have put the game into safe keeping with a favourable call on any of four disallowed tries in the second half.
Clarence Town conceded a late penalty and after a long touch-finder Stockton took advantage of territory and were able to score.
Best forward: Grace Miller, best back: Jess Taylor and players' player: Elizabeth Papamau.
Maytom said the club owed special thanks to Peter and Bev Maytom, Steve Maytom for setting up the ground and Jacinta and Phil for setting up the hall for the annual ball.
