With the sound of rain on the roof this week, drought ever in our thoughts and the last week of winter upon us, weather and its impacts on our lives is a constant in our conversations.

We are lucky to be part of a vibrant, creative and beautiful rural setting and community. However from time to time we are tested by the complexities of our natural environment (its fire, flood and drought). It is in these times that our community – its creativity, tenacity and beauty - comes to the fore.
Last week I had the opportunity to share some of the lessons identified from a community perspective of the power and importance of community in times of need.
Then, this morning I was reminded of that again – how in times of stress we reach out to others to connect, share and support – when two lovely ladies from Sydney came to offer donations through local businesses to the community centre. They were helping us help those in our community who can use some support.
We never know when we ourselves might need some support and we often are unaware that the skills and abilities we have are the very thing that others will draw strength and support from.
Being prepared is being connected. It is through our community connections, the ones we rely on in our daily lives, that we draw strength and support. It is the relationships we have through school, the soccer club, CWA, Lions, Rotary, sewing group, yoga group, hairdresser or book club that bring opportunity, joy, support and strength to our lives.
They are also the relationships that, in a disaster, will help us not only survive, but also to thrive in our recovery.
So now is the time to be reaching out to these relationships and connections and talking with friends, family and neighbours about how, together, we can all be prepared.
The community centre will share our Being Prepared is Being Connected resources throughout the community over the coming weeks. You can also visit our website: www.dscc.net.au/disaster-preparedness/ for information, tips and hints that can help you be prepared and Get Ready.
September is Get Ready month – with any of our local RFS units having Get Ready weekend open days and NSW SES gearing up for storm season, now is the perfect time to talk with friends, family and neighbours about how you can Get Ready.
