Booomerang Bags were officially launched at the Clarence Town IGA on Monday, April 23 where shoppers can collect a cloth bag for their groceries instead of using a plastic bag.
The bags will also be available from Shaw’s Bakery and the Grey Street Boutique.
Boomerang Bags have been in Dungog for several years with a group of dedicated volunteers meeting to sew with more than 200 bags in circulation.
Clarence Town volunteers have been meeting for months sewing bags for their town and expect the bags to be popular.
“We have a small group of volunteers, but the numbers are growing,” said Colleen Duffy from Boomerang Bags Clarence Town.
“We meet each Monday at the Clarence Town School of Arts Hall at 10am and every second week the “Nourish Kitchen” runs as well so its quite a busy day when that is on.”
JR Richards in conjunction with Dungog Council Waste Education Program has funded the purchase of a silk screen for printing different pockets along with ink and other essentials that the group needs to produce the bags.
Clarence Town School of Arts Hall committee (of which Mrs Duffy is the President) and the Progress Association have also been supporting the group with printing costs and incidentals.
“To date we have 370 bags completed and a lot in the work-in-progress stage,” said Mrs Duffy.
“Once we start using the screen printed pockets we hope to sell the bags for a small amount to cover the costs of thread.
“Materials have been donated by Anglican Church Op Shop along with lots of the community dropping materials into us.
“We are always looking for donations of material and of course more volunteers.”
