During Book Week Doug read to as many children as he could, following his mantra of: “10 minutes a day, talk sing play, share a book today!"
Children in Dungog Shire schools and childcare centres went on a Crocodile Hunt with Doug and a string of Aussie animals as they shared a story and a love of reading and books.
Rebecca Boland, of Clarence Town Preschool, said Doug brought the tale to life and added to the drama and magic that brought joy to reading.
“The use of receptive and expressive language, sharing story times and exploring the use of print are daily practice at preschool,” Ms Boland said.
“Formal literacy practices such as writing and reading are promoted through play so that the experiences are meaningful and encourage participation.”
On Saturday, August 27, Doug hosted a book party at the Dungog Library to celebrate Book Week.
The 2017 theme was Australian Stories so Doug and about 150 of his book-loving friends made Wombat Stew.
MEALS ON WHEELS
Meals on Wheels recipients and volunteers will gather for a morning tea today at Dungog Day Care Centre and enjoy entertainment by the children of Joeys Preschool. The event aims to recognise the organisation’s volunteers and celebrate National Meals on Wheels Day.
