Broke tells the story of a fictional rugby league superstar, Ben Kelly, a Queensland representative and hometown hero, whose life spirals out of control in retirement at the hands of alcohol and a gambling addiction.
Seasoned Aussie actor Steve Le Marquand (Underbelly, Two Hands, Kokoda) plays 'BK' and says that recent off-field controversies highlight the themes found within the film.
Broke also stars Max Cullen, Brendan Cowell, Claire Van Der Boom and Steve Bastoni.
Broke has been winning awards and getting invited into festivals across the world since its launch at Melbourne Film Festival.
The movie has got the backing of the NRL, Men of League and Country Rugby League.
The James Theatre has been specially invited as one of the few venues for screening of this much anticipated Aussie feature.
Heath Davis, the director and screenwriter, will be in attendance at the screening, and will take part in a Q and A session after the screening, along with Keith Onslow, the inspirational and popular Newcastle & Central Coast Regional Rugby League Manager for the Country Rugby League of New South Wales.
Broke will be screening at the James Theatre on Saturday, May 14 at 7 pm.
