Part of the face of Mt Richardson became unstable after the floods last month with the one side of the road now closed to traffic.
Traffic lights are currently in place around the landslip.
Dungog Council’s manager of infrastructure and assets Steve Hitchens said a fracture has developed in the cut face of the mountain on the western section.
“We’ve had geotechnical advice the face is unstable so experts will be blasting on Saturday next week,” Mr Hitchens said.
“It’s roughly a 200-metre section involved and will involve surface blasting which is designed to remove everything in front that is unstable.
“The two-day closure will enable the road to be cleaned up and made trafficable as soon possible.”
Traffic going between Gresford and Dungog will be diverted through Vacy and Horns Crossing Road.
