"The works, which include 22 sections of roadway spanning 17.6 kilometres, will rehabilitate a critical link between Dungog, Clarence Town, Raymond Terrace and the lower Hunter Region," Federal Member for Lyne, David Gillespie said.

"This is funded under the Australian Government's $4.6 billion Roads of Strategic Importance initiative.

"These works will improve freight efficiency, extend existing B-Double networks and boost the productivity of local industries.

"It's also an important road for families who are travelling to work and school and for our primary producers who are getting product to market. These works will ensure a safer journey for all."

During September and October, while essential repairs were undertaken, motorists who use the Brig O'Johnston Bridge at Clarence Town faced at least an extra 35 minutes to their journey.

Dr Gillespie said smoother, more efficient journeys will deliver economic and social benefits by boosting jobs around Dungog and improving economic growth in key areas such as tourism.

He said the road works will begin immediately with both Port Stephens and Dungog Councils undertaking the works.

Dungog Shire and Transport for NSW will continue to work closely on the development of the new bridge across the Williams River adjacent to Brig O'Johnston Bridge.
