The NSW Government is funding essential repairs on the bridge over the Williams River starting on September 26.
Transport for NSW will carry out the work, which includes replacing the damaged bridge support trusses.
The project is planed for the September/October school holiday period to minimise the impact on school buses and school traffic.
The work will be carried out between 6am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.
Work will start at 7am on 26 September and is expected to be completed in 16 days, weather permitting.
The bridge will reopen to traffic from 5pm on Sunday, October 11.
Transport for NSW will continue to work closely with Dungog Shire on the development of Council's project to construct a new bridge across the Williams River adjacent to Brig O'Johnston Bridge.
Bridge closures and traffic changes
There will be some temporary traffic changes to ensure the work zone is safe.
The work requires a full bridge closure for the duration of the project to ensure the safety of workers and motorists. Pedestrians wanting to use the bridge during work hours will be guided through the work site and will have full access after-hours.
Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs. For the latest traffic updates, you can call 132 701, visit livetraffic.com or download the Live Traffic NSW App.
Detour route
During the project a full bridge closure will be required with detours in place.
Map 1 shows two detour routes for light vehicles.
Map 2 shows a more suitable and preferred detour route for heavy vehicles.
The detour routes for light vehicles are expected to add up to 28 kilometres to journeys, which is about 35 minutes travel time.
The preferred heavy vehicle detour route is expected to add up to 50 kilometres to journeys, which is about 50 minutes travel time.
How will the work affect you?
The work will involve the use of machinery which generates some noise. Cranes will be required and will be located on both the northern and southern sides of the bridge while we carry out the work.
Every effort to minimise noise by turning off machinery and vehicles when not in use. You may notice workers on site carrying out preparation works for the project over the coming days and weeks.
