Born in Dungog on March 20, 1932, Mr Bacon died on March 12.
Mr Bacon, regarded by many as one of Dungog's favourite sons, competed in three Olympic Games.
In 1964 he was on the team in Tokyo riding Ocean Foam.
The next two Olympics he was on his old faithful black horse, Chichester.
In 1968 he competed in Mexico City - being farewelled at Dungog RSL Club by a massive crowd which had also gathered to welcome home cricket great Doug Walters.
Eight years later in 1976 they rode in the summer games in Montreal, Canada. Regarded as one of Australia's greatest riders of all time in 1994 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) and in 2000 he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his achievements.
Mr Bacon was also a four time champion at Madison Square Garden in New York and also won Grands Prix in Canada and Europe.
He also won the Berlin International Championship on his great little Chichester.
With a unique jumping style, he wowed audiences across the world.
When his riding slowed down he became known as one of the first horse dentists in Europe. Mr Bacon is survived by his second wife Anita, his daughters Mandy, Lindy, Julie and Vicki and their mother Margaret.
