Council's manager of Environmental Services Paul Minett said the modern style drinking fountains are long overdue and already proving to be popular.
"These units also assist the community and council to focus on minimising reliance on single use plastics by providing a location for refilling reusable water bottles," he said.
Whilst this type of water refill station may not be new to many residents with some existing in non public properties such as the Dungog High School, the council-installed units are the first of this type of design in a public space in the shire.
The refill station at the Visitors Information Centre was sponsored by Council's waste collection contractor JR Richards. Fountains at Clarence Town School of Arts Park, Vacy Park and the Dungog Netball Courts are due to be installed in coming weeks thanks to a grant from Hunter Water.
