July is National Desexing Month and Dungog shire residents are encouraged to have their animals desexed.
National Desexing Month is an Australia-wide initiative aimed at increasing desexing rates and reducing unwanted dogs and cats in local communities by making the procedure more affordable for pet owners.
Council's Environmental Compliance Officer Holley Patterson said desexing is part of responsible pet ownership and offers numerous health, behavioural and cost benefits.
"Desexed pets generally live longer and healthier lives due to reduced risk of some cancers and other health factors," Ms Patterson said.
"Pets that are desexed are also less likely to suffer from anti-social behaviours and there are significant cost benefits as a result.
"Council offers a reduction in registration costs for desexed animals and as part of National Desexing Month initiative, the Dungog Veterinary Hospital and Williams River Vet are offering advice on desexing."
