Five films make up the 2019 Festival of Foreign Films, Agog!, to be held over July 5 and 6 at the James Theatre.
Presented by the Friends of the James Theatre Inc, Agog! 2019 will be launched on Friday at 7pm with a critical and audience favourite at last year's Cannes Film Festival, the splendid Cold War. Pawel Pawlikowski's musical romance is a ravishing, music-fuelled romance charting two mismatched lovers caught between East and West in 1950s Europe.
The Saturday starts at 10.30am with The Realm, a fast-paced thriller which depicts Spain's political world through the shamelessness of a politician who will stop at nothing to avoid taking responsibility for his actions. At 2 pm the Festival resumes with The Guilty, a sleek and unrelenting Danish thriller, in which a police officer assigned dispatch duty enters a race against time when he answers an emergency call from a kidnapped woman.
The afternoon continues at 4 pm with a blast of Gallic charm in Family Photo, which gathers some of France's most beloved stars for a superbly witty and entertaining new dramedy about the travails of family, that was a major success with French critics and audiences in 2018.
The renowned Supper behind the Screen returns, prior to the Saturday night film, the gloriously Icelandic Woman at War, an offbeat, poignant and visually exquisite modern-day fable about a female David taking on the Goliath of her country's government.
Tickets are now available online. Prices are: all five films - $70. Single films - $16. Four Saturday films $60. Supper behind the Screen $40. (Plus a small administration fee).
