A total of $24,000 was raised for Senior Constable Dave Hanna, an officer who has spent close to 30 years working in Raymond Terrace and Dungog, after he was found to have a high grade melanoma at Christmas that required surgery.
"Dave had to have surgery at short notice to limit the potential impacts on his future health in a private hospital at some significant cost. He was not covered by private health insurance," Chief Inspector Tony Townsend, from the Port Stephens Hunter Police District, said.
"Dave is a true gentleman. He is one of the most unassuming, competent and professional officers you will ever come across.
"Dave unsurprisingly requested that no-one make a fuss about his health and financial circumstances however myself and a number of others insisted that we would. He reluctantly agreed on the basis that some of the funds go to a worthy charity."
Money was raised through a charity golf day, played at Muree Golf Club in Raymond Terrace on April 4, and a dinner afterwards.
About 100 golfers hit the greens while the dinner attracted about 200 people, including Raymond Terrace Cricket Club members.
Senior Constable Hanna has played cricket with the club during the years.
Michael Hagan, an assistant coach with the Australian rugby league team, guest spoke at the dinner and John Paul Young provided entertainment on the night.
Through the golf day and other donations, including $2500 from the Old Boars Motorcycle Club, a total of $24,000 was raised.
The total was split with half going to Senior Constable Hanna and the other half to the Mark Hughes Foundation.
Organisers of the golf day, Senior Constable Hanna and Old Boars members met with Mark Hughes outside McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on April 24 for the cheque handover.
Senior Constable Hanna has recently returned to work following surgery for a high grade Melanoma on his head in mid-January.
