The upcoming state election already has a clear winner - Dungog roads.

Whatever party takes government on March 23 the roads in the shire will see a dramatic injection of funds - with both major parties making election commitments.

Michael Johnsen MP, Member for Upper Hunter  joined with Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey MP in Dungog on Monday to announce that council roads such as The Bucketts Way and Dungog Road will be transferred back to the state by a re-elected NSW Nationals.

“I have been advocating for the return of these roads to the State Government for some time now, so I am delighted that this is a commitment going into the election,” Mr Johnsen said.

“Communities such as Dungog will greatly benefit from the burden of these roads being lifted from council and taken up by the State Government.”

Up to 15,000 kilometres of roads would be transferred, Minister Pavey said.

Bridges in the shire would also be be transformed with Mr Johnsen last week announcing a $16 million commitment from the NSW Nationals to repair its bridges.

Mr Johnsen said the upgrades are a part of the Nationals in government’s Fixing Country Bridges commitment.

“This $16 million funding commitment from the NSW Nationals to Dungog Shire will significantly ease the burden on council and our local ratepayers and create a new legacy in the management of our iconic timber bridges," he said.

“Dungog council will be asked to nominate bridges that are currently rated in poor condition to be included in the fund.

“Our commitment will help ensure Dungog Shire residents can maintain easy access to towns, jobs, schools and hospital facilities.”
