Upper Hunter Cancer Action Network (UHCAN) members have delivered 335 signed “Saving Life 2019” postcards to NSW MP Michael Johnsen.
The postcards were signed at various community events, at Dungog, Muswellbrook and Singleton Relays for Life, and online.
The postcard campaign hopes to show politicians the ways in which we can support people with lymphoedema, protect the community from tobacco, and tackle childhood obesity.
Sarah Lukeman, Chairperson of UHCAN, said that since the Saving Life 2019 campaign launched in July, more than 12,500 people across NSW have indicated their support for the campaign by signing a postcard.
“We are thrilled with the support from the Upper Hunter electorate,” she said.
“The number of postcards we have received show just how many people care about the issues presented in Saving Life 2019 and the importance of bringing these to the attention of the next NSW Government.”
By delivering the signed postcards to Michael Johnsen, Cancer Council hopes to generate support so that the NSW Government will adopt one or more of the Saving Life 2019 priorities as party policy in the lead up to the NSW election to be held in March 2019.
“Saving Life 2019 outlines the most important opportunities for the next NSW Government to reduce the impact of cancer on the community,” said Ms Lukeman.
“With Michael Johnsen’s and the community’s support, we can influence decision-making and get one step closer to a cancer free future.”
Community members across the Upper Hunter electorate can show their support of Saving Life 2019 by visiting www.canact.com.au, and attending a Saving Life 2019 forum at Muswellbrook Race Club at 7pm on 4 February 2019, to mark World Cancer Day.
“We’re pleased that Mr Johnsen and a number of other candidates standing for the seat, will join us to hear about our Saving Life 2019 agenda and outline the role they will play, if elected, in bringing about the changes needed for our community,” added Ms Lukeman.
To RSVP to the Upper Hunter Saving Life 2019 forum, contact Glen Parsons, Community Programs Coordinator at Cancer Council’s Singleton office on 0428 101 252 or email glenp@nswcc.org.au by 25 January.
