It’s yet another cute and cuddly addition to the time-honoured agricultural show which runs this year Friday and Saturday, November 9-10.
“I posted a pic of the Dachshund Dashers on our Facebook Page last week as a bit of fun and the reaction was insane,” event co-ordinator Taneal Anderson said.
“I didn’t realise there were so many Dachshund lovers in the country. There’s a couple talking about coming down from Queensland just for that. But I think it’s great way of generating awareness of our show, and what a fun and positive event it is.”
One of the longest-running country shows in Australia, the Dungog event showcases the role and importance of agriculture in the region, promotes local business and gives a community that has been doing it particularly tough through the drought a reason to come together and celebrate.
“This year, along with the Camel Cup and Dachshund Dash we’ll have a full program of animal ring events and horse sports over the two days, pavilion exhibitions, classes and competitions, plus rides and attraction for the young and young at heart.”
Gates open 9am each day with Friday featuring horse sports, pavilion displays and an army of children attending the annual educational Schools Program.
“We’re expecting something like 450 kids from local schools,” Ms Anderson said.
“The idea is to keep that interest in farming alive by giving kids a hands-on experience. This year’s theme is ‘A step back in time’,
“We’ll have spinners and weavers, shearing, bushcraft and bush medicine, the Royal Lifesavers will be there and kids will get to experience animals hands-on in the animal nursery.”
Saturday morning the best dressed pet competition will be judged, along with adjudication across beef, poultry and goat categories, followed by the grand parade at 2pm then the crowning of Junior Miss Showgirl.
A full program of ring events featuring horse sports will keep spectators enthralled throughout the day, interspersed with heats of the hotly contested Camel Cup and Dachshund Dash.
“The Dog High Jump is always a highlight and the Tractor Pull, Jack n Jill post splitting and Demolition Derby will be action-packed,” Ms Anderson said. “Local band “24 Hours” will keep the party pumping from approximately 8pm onwards following the fireworks.”
Specialty food carts will provide a tasty range of food and beverages, the barby will be fired up both days, and bar facilities will be available. Accommodation is available at local hotels, motels and BnBs.
