Dungog Regional Tourism (DRT) has applied for $1.7 million in funding from the NSW Government’s Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund to improve outdoor areas across the shire.
Chair of DRT Dr Cameron Archer said Dungog is “the camping and outdoor recreation capital of the Hunter Valley” but improvements to facilities were needed.
He said when researching for the funding application the board was struck by the passion and enthusiasm of all the people involved, particularly the volunteers, who have toiled away for years developing facilities across the shire.
“Likewise, the work done by Forestry Corporation of NSW and Dungog Council has been significant given the available resources,” he said.
“It was, however, clear everything needed an injection of funds to upgrade and grow capacity – hence the grant application.”
The sites are Gresford Showground and Recreation Area, Paterson Sportsground, Dungog Common, Dungog Showground, Williams River Holiday Park and Chichester Forest (East and West).
“The submission emphasised the opportunity to grow mountain bike riding in the region but particularly at Dungog Common,” said Dr Archer.
“The Common presents a real opportunity to create an iconic location for outdoor recreation.”
The many horse related activities and events in the region were also seen as important.
“The forests and what they have to offer is enduring, but will be even better when the infrastructure is improved,” said Dr Archer.
“Forestry Corporation of NSW is doing a very good job in the Chichester Forests (East and West) and the potential to further this is great.”
Dr Archer said the project means that a sound basis will be developed to further promote what Dungog Shire has to offer.
“Not everyone wishes to camp, but many do,” he said.
“There also needs to be other accommodation and services to support visitors.
“The stronger the demand, the better services for everyone.”
The outcome of the funding application will not be known until late this year or early next year..
