Maitland’s new No. 1 Sportsground will host a second A-League football match with Newcastle Jets set to clash with the Western Sydney Wanderers in a trial game on September 29.

The clash follows the success of the friendly between the Jets and the Central Coast Mariners in Maitland last month.

The Wanderers have been a powerhouse club since they entered the competition in 2012, taking home the minor premiership trophy in their first season and amazingly, winning the AFC Champions League in 2014. However, after going all the way to the decider last season, Newcastle will be looking to continue their good form and claim outright victory.

Maitland Mayor Cr Loretta Baker said there was an outstanding community response to the Jets vs Mariners game and council built a strong partnership with the Newcastle club. “So when we were approached about another game we were more than happy to get behind it,” she said. “I am excited about this game because I know that Western Sydney has a passionate fan base and it will be great to attract these people to Maitland.”

Jets CEO, Lawrie McKinna said the success of the trial against the Mariners made this decision an easy one. “It was a great event the facilities were first class and the people of Maitland turned out in numbers,” he said.

“When the option to play another friendly in became apparent, Maitland’s No.1 Sportsground was the first place that came to mind. The Wanderers will bring plenty of support with them, so I’d encourage everyone to get along in their red and blue to see the boys in action.”
