For the past 10 years Chris Fibbens has been a driving force behind the free Christmas day lunch which attracts up to 80 people who may otherwise spend the day alone.
The event is supported by the Dungog Shire Community Centre, local businesses, service groups, churches and individuals.
When Mr Fibbens heard that Dungog Shire’s Community Centre was reporting a high incidence of residents looking for assistance in the form of emergency relief - and was shown figures indicating that many Australians suffer from food insecurity at some point every year – he was determined to help do something about it locally.
“Governments can only do so much and there’s lots of reasons why sometimes we need a little help,” he said.
“Now’s a good time for neighbour to help neighbour and for the community to demonstrate that it’s welcoming and supportive.
“So with the help of the Dungog Shire Community Centre, Neighbourcare, the Uniting Church and with support from Dungog’s Mayor, Tracy Norman, sponsors and volunteers, a free community lunch will become a reality every Tuesday from September 18.
“As well as providing a nourishing meal, the lunch will give residents - whether they be families, individuals, young or elderly or those isolated - an opportunity to socialise with others and talk with counsellors, financial or otherwise if they wish to.”
For catering purposes, residents are asked to book at the Community Centre on 4992 1133 or call in to the Centre at 103 Dowling Street.
Lunch will be served between 12 noon and 1.30pm.
“If transport is an issue, there’s a good chance we can help with that,” said Mr Fibbens.
Mr Fibbens still needs more sponsors to help cover the cost of individual meals as well as a few volunteers who are able to give some time on a roster basis. If you can help in any way phone him on 4992 3913 or contact the Community Centre.
“The first lunch will be a baked dinner with dessert and fruit so make sure you contact the Community Centre and reserve your seat,” said Mr Fibbens.
