The State Member for Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen said work will involve tightening bolts on the bridge deck with crews working on the deck and from a platform under the bridge.

“Work will start on Monday, May 28 and that work is expected to be completed by mid-June, weather permitting,” he said.

Work will be carried out between 7am and 5pm on weekdays.

While no delays are expected during the morning and afternoon peaks, motorists are advised to allow an extra 15 minutes of travel time while work is carried out outside the peak hours.

Lane closures, traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists, with motorists reminded to drive to the conditions and follow the direction of signs and traffic control.

The Brig O’Johnston Bridge over the Williams River was built in 1880 and is the oldest surviving timber truss bridge in NSW.

The bridge is one of 26 bridges identified for conservation in the Roads and Maritime Timber Truss Bridge Conservation Strategy, which was developed in consultation with the Heritage Council of NSW.

This routine maintenance is in preparation for future rehabilitation of the bridge with Roads and Maritime working with the Office of Environment and Heritage on the future work.
