The students have been learning about road safety in preparation for the community initiative that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide.
Classes have been practicing how to cross the road safely at the nearby pedestrian crossings and will be having road safety talks from Dungog Shire Council's Road Safety Officer. On Friday, all students who walk to school are encouraged to walk to school safely, making sure they are responsible and use the correct pedestrian crossing points. Younger students are encouraged to walk to school with an adult and discuss correct road safety as they go.
The annual event, now in its 19th year, encourages primary school aged children to build walking into their daily routine, by walking to and from school. Until they are 10, children are advised to hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road.
