After a delayed start to the new year with a forfeit in the first round, Paterson’s bowlers were also on top dismissing the visiting team for 103 in hot, windy conditions.
Paterson’s big total was anchored by an unbeaten 65 by No.3 Chris Merchant, with Rod Faulkner adding a valuable, quick-fire 43 at the end of the innings.
The homeside was cruising at 0-50 when openers Matthew Jones (25) and Ramsey Vane-Wood (23) were dismissed leaving Merchant and Kurt Humphreys to take up the attack.
They took the score to 122 when Humphreys fell for 26, Reece Presland was out shortly after for two, but any hopes SMR held of curbing Paterson’s runs were blasted away by Faulkner and skipper Russel Presland (17 not out).
SMR’s run chase started poorly with opener Adam Pelley out for a duck off the bowling off Steve Jenkins (1-20).
However, the early loss brought in No.3 David Seers who appeared to be determined to knock off the target on his own hitting seven fours and a six to rapidly reach 44.
SMR’s resistance ended when he was caught behind to become the first of Rigby Vane-Wood’s victims. Only Daniel Morris (19) was able to reach double figures as the remainder of the batting order were dismissed in 30 overs for 103.
Paterson are third on the A-grade table on 40 point, four points behind competition leaders Port Stephens 1st XI and one point adrift of second place Port Stephens 2nd XI.
SMR remain in fourth place on 31, less than a game ahead of Regal Hunter Tigers (29) and Raworth Rabbitohs (28).
Paterson are on the road next round to take on Raworth Rabbitohs at Ernie Jurd Oval.
C-GRADE

The result leaves them in second spot on the table equal with Hinton on 14 points and three points behind Belmore. Tenambit Morpeth Bulls are fourth with 12 points, with Kurri a point back in fifth.
Adam Hicks had an outstanding game in Paterson’s win, taking 2-19 as Belmore were restricted to 7/92 and then scoring unbeaten 59 as Paterson got home with seven wickets and 10 overs to spare.
Paterson fell five runs short against Kurri who posted 9/107. Paterson’s Shaun Presland claimed 5/18 and Jacob Watson was 45 not out in Paterson’s inning of 6/102.
