Thanks to a team of volunteers the centre hosts an annual Christmas Day luncheon for people who may otherwise spend the day alone.

Along with a wholesome Christmas meal, there’s music and even a small gift from Santa and it’s all completely free of charge.

Anyone is welcome to attend the event and no questions are asked about your presence.

This is the ninth year the Dungog Shire Community Centre has co-ordinated sponsors of produce and cash that enable the event to be staged.

Event Team Leader Chris Fibbens said it was only through the town’s generosity that the lunch was possible.

He  thanked the sponsors and also his dozen or so volunteers who turn up on Christmas Day to share the chores – and the love. 

Last year more than 80 meals were served and this year organisers hope just as many people – if not more – will attend.

“Many have been helping since the first lunch all those years ago, they’re very special people,” said Chris.

 “So it’s Christmas lunch with all the trimmings, it’s free and we welcome anyone and everyone, families, friends and individuals.

“Please just come, there’s no need to book and if you need help with transport simply contact the Community Centre and we’ll be happy to pick you up and take you home.”

One of the youngest helpers is Aimee Debbage who wouldn’t be anywhere else on Christmas Day.

Aimee and her mother Andrea have been coming to the event since its second year and both “love it”.

The event will be held on Christmas Day between 11.30am to 1.30pm at the Dungog Primary School – using the Chapman Street entrance
