Dungog High School students got a taste of the future when the University of Wollongong STEM roadshow came to visit.
STEM is an acronym for the subjects Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
The presenters were undergraduates from the UOW and presented a series of fun, hands on, interactive workshops on bridge building, coding of robots, virtual race car and demonstrations of 3D printers.
The day gave the 150 Year 8 students from Dungog and Bulahdelah High Schools discovered the wonders of the STEM subjects whilst having lots of fun at the same time.
The afternoon session started with a team of BOEING Defence Engineers talking and answering questions about their careers in aerospace and the opportunity for both job satisfaction and travel.
John Walton from BAE Systems Electronics gave a talk on electronics in defence aviation and all defence areas, highlighting to students that if they are interested in problem solving and travel then the field of electronics is open to them.
The students were advised that all subjects are valuable for developing the skills needed in these careers (not just the Sciences and Maths) and it is especially important to develop communication and teamwork skills too which are learnt through subjects such as English, Geography and PE.
Dungog High School thanked Regional Development Australia (Hunter) ME Program for their financial support of STEM in the region and the Rotary Club for providing morning tea and lunch for the students.
