The Community Fire Unit is comprised of about seven members of the Bendola/Salisbury Rural Fire Service brigade, who saw the need for a fast response and appreciate that time is of the essence in fire control.
The trailer will be based at the Bandon Grove Hall and trialLed over the coming summer to assess its capabilities and usefulness.
“It means we can be more flexible in our response if a fire does break out, we can be ready,” said CFU member Bruce Read.
“To get to some of the properties it can be a round trip of three quarters of an hour from the station.
“In the event of a fire, the trailer will be hitched to a standard tow bar and deployed to the fire.
“Being locally based the trailer could be at the scene of the fire in advance of the other local fire fighting units.”
The trailer has a pump and fittings that attach to water tanks or can draw from dams or rivers. It also carries other equipment such as Macleod tools. Valued at over $4000 the trailer has been waiting to be commissioned by the Maitland RFS for some time, Mr Read said.
“It does have its limitations but we will trial its effectiveness,” he said.
