Fascinators and pretty dresses were out in force at several venues across the Dungog Shire.
For those who had to work there was still plenty of fun with sandwiches and staff dressing up, huddling around the office television to watch the race.
In the Melbourne Cup’s 154-year history, there have been more than 30 winners with links to the Hunter, starting with the 1867 champion Tim Whiffler, from Tocal on the Paterson River.
