It was the type of innings that would normally steal the show, but in the Pythons ranks was one of the undisputed batting talents of Maitland one-day cricket Josh Moxey who matched Vane-Woods innings and went one better with an unbeaten century and victory.
Vane-Wood played a lone-hand with the bat apart from Brad Merchant who chipped in with 28 as Paterson managed 157 in reply to Port’s 7-238 from their 40 overs.
The batting collapse was uncharacteristic of Paterson who normally string together a series of partnerships to build an innings.
If Vane-Wood can continue the form, which made him a regular representative player in Maitland, support from players such as Daniel Agland, David Puxty, Russell Presland and Rigby Vane-Wood should see Paterson feature strongly again at the business end of the season.
Allan Baldwin and Brendon Sinclair both finished with figures of 3-25 to be the chief wicket takers for the Pythons.
Moxey was the star with the bat for Port, but they were also able to count on valuable contributions from Matthew Monaghan (28), Lleyton Eveleigh (33) and a number of other small cameos.
Russell Presland was the main wicket taker for Paterson with 3-46 from his eight overs and Jason Watts finished with 2-45. Skipper Rod Faulkner with 1-22 off eight and Ramsey Vane-Wood with 0-22 off eight were the most economical.
Paterson and Port Stephens are the remaining two teams from the original A-grade this season and will take part in a merged 10-team combined A-B competition.
The planned Twenty20 series in the middle of the season will not be played to ensure teams are able to play each other as often as possible.
A revised draw for A-B-grade is expected to be finalised by Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in C-grade Paterson had a bye this week but Paterson C Grade opened their season with a win against new team to the comp Tenambit/Morpeth.
Winning the toss, Paterson sent the Bulls into bat and restricted them to 10/126 off 34.1 overs.
Shaun Presland 3-18 off seven, Jason Watson (2-24 off 7), Harrison Bridges (2-/24 off 3.1), Grant Jackson (1-31 off 7) and Jake Watson (1-8 off 7) were the wicket takers. Jason Watson also secured a run out,
In reply Paterson cruised past the score 4/142 off 24 overs. Adam Hicks top scored with 60 including eight fours and a six, Adam Kidd made 46 (eight fours and a six) and Daniel Agland finished on 20 not out.
