Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said confirmation of the funding was great news for the local community.
“This is the main freight corridor through East Gresford and Dungog to the east, making these upgrades essential for freight carriers to safely and efficiently shift goods out of major regional centres such as Singleton, Maitland and the Lower Hunter area,” Dr Gillespie said.
“These works are going to build on the previous $784,000 Coalition Government upgrade to Park Street south of Durham Road, which was completed in June 2017 and funded under the Roads to Recovery program.”
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the funding would help fix pavement and drainage issues to improve safety and accessibility for motorists and heavy vehicles.
“At the 2016 election, the Coalition pledged to fix problems with drainage and rough road surfaces on Park Street and Durham Road to make it safer in all weather conditions for local, commercial and tourist traffic using the route,” Mr Chester said.
Dungog Mayor Cr Nancy Knudsen described the funding as a big win for the Dungog Shire.
“The fulfilment of this 2016 Election Commitment will allow local industries to be more competitive by boosting efficiencies, while all road users will enjoy a safer road with a better ride quality, particularly in wet weather,” Cr Knudsen said.
This project will deliver a 12 metre-wide roadway including travel and parking lanes, drainage works, kerb and gutter improvements, pavement replacement and other works.
The works are expected to be completed by the end of 2017, weather permitting. The Coalition Government has committed $1 million and Dungog Shire Council $50,000 to fund the project.
