The NSW Government is funding work on the historic bridge on Limeburners Creek Road at Clarence Town.
This includes routine maintenance of the timber trusses and the existing bailey support system in preparation for future upgrade work.
The work has also involved replacing the deck on three northern approach spans.
Work will be carried out on weekdays between 6.30am and 5pm, weather permitting.
For the safety of workers and motorists, changed traffic conditions will be in place including a reduced 40 km/h speed limit, traffic control and signs.
Motorists may experience delays of up to 20 minutes outside of peak hours and are advised to allow extra travel time.
The existing 40 tonne load limit and the existing detour for vehicles over 40 tonnes remain in place while work is carried out.
The detour adds around 50 kilometres to journeys, and road users should allow an additional 50 minutes to their travel time.
The bridge will remain open to all other traffic.
Dungog Shire Council has looked to the federal government for help to build a new bridge over the Williams River, applying for a $5 million grant.
If successful, the council would combine the funds with the $5.5 million the state government pitched in last month and build a concrete bridge alongside the heritage-listed Brig O’Johnston Bridge.
