Just this morning I was in the office when a gentleman came in carrying a boomerang bag and he quietly walked over to our Fresh Food Fare fridge and started placing full egg cartons into the fridge.
I thanked him for his lovely donation, he simply smiled and said: “I hope they help someone out, the girls lay more than I need,” and with a smile he slowly shuffled out.
Last week a young man whom we have assisted in the past came in to donate eight bags of oranges that he had picked from a tree growing in his back yard.
He wanted to give back to the centre for the help he had been given and to help others going through a tough time.
‘’It’s not much but I hope it help someone else, I know it meant lots to me to have a meal when I was low. I can bring in bags of oranges each week so let me know when you need more.”
These simple acts are the ones that last, they are the things that get people through, they are the moments people draw on at their times of challenge and distress.
This is because they are unexpected, they are unsolicited, they are a random act of kindness that says someone cares – you are important and you have been thought of.
These simple acts of sharing home-grown produce have brought so much benefit to so many people. I see it every day. The smile on a child’s face when their Mum gets some eggs from the fridge and they pick herbs from the community garden and say we will have dinner tonight.
The elderly woman who smiles and shares a story of picking oranges as a child from her grandmother’s tree as she is given free oranges from a stranger.
It doesn’t take much to change a life, it often just takes a little thought, a smile and small act of kindness. There are many ways you can be part of giving and sharing with your community.
You can donate home grown produce through Fresh Food Fare, you could shout a coffee through one of our cafes, you could give a few hours to a local community group or service club to help them in their efforts of supporting our community.
It is the little things that matter most, so share a small moment of kindness with your community today – it will make a world of change for everyone.
