“I like the idea of having the ability to help people,” he said of his entry in the Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser.

“Every $80 I raise provides a night’s accommodation for someone with blood cancer and their carer,” he said.

“Last time The Royal entered the fundraiser we got 13 nights and we are aiming to smash that this year.”

At the time of going to press he had raised $2371 which put him at the top of the fundraising leader board in Australia in the competition.

“I have set a personal goal of $4000 and if we hit that I’m going to die my hair “leukaemia blue,” he said.

Adding even more incentive for patrons to help with the fundraising is licensee Jessica Clark who said she would also die her blonde locks bright blue if Daniel reached his target in August.

While it’s a fun promotion, the “ugly” stands for “Understanding – Generous – Likeable – You”.

The hotel has ugly buckets on the bar and the “balance a gold coin on the lemon” which his proving popular with patrons.

Daniel has a raffle for two three-day passes to the V8 supercars in Newcastle and is also selling wristbands and other “ugly” promotional material.

Daniel’s wife Louise grew up in Dungog and five years ago the couple relocated to the town to be closer to their parents.

Daniel works part time as a bartender at the Royal Hotel and Burns Earthmoving.

Colourful Newcastle identity former Allan Robinson will be emcee for the "Ugly Trivia/Auction" Night on October 28. The dinner and trivia night at the hotel will include an auction.

Daniel is looking for sponsors and donations for that night.

“All sponsors will be advertised in house and on our Facebook page,” he said.

“I can supply a letter of authorisation to fundraise on behalf of the Foundation.”

Every day, 35 Australians are diagnosed with blood cancer.

It is the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer or melanoma.

Since 2009 U.G.L.Y. Bartenders have raised over $10 million providing over 125,000 nights of accommodation.
