In Dowling Street Dungog, nine-year-old twins Tahlia and Sophie Zenardi are hosting a morning tea with an array of delectable home made goodies.
The Dungog Public School students, who love to cook, spent hours making an assortment of goodies for the morning including jam drops, butterfly cakes and cupcakes.
The girls’ mother Tammy said other people had also contributed home made goods for the morning.
Now in its 24th year, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of Cancer Council’s leading fundraising events and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia.
This year, Cancer Council NSW hopes to recruit 11,100 morning tea hosts, including 1,100 hosts in the Hunter and raise over $4.9 million across the state.
To mark the occasion, Cancer Council NSW has launched the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Cookbook, with 29 recipes to inspire NSW residents to put the kettle on in support of the 1 in 2 Australians who will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.
The cookbook is available to download for free online at www.cancercouncil.com.au/abmt-cookbook-2017.
Shayne Connell, Regional Manager, Cancer Council Hunter Region, says every morning tea makes a difference.
“One Australian is diagnosed with cancer approximately every 5 minutes, the length of an average tea break. Today is all about making your cuppa count.
“Every amount raised, big or small, can go a long way. $15 allows Cancer Council to provide easy-to-understand information on treatments, practical advice and emotional support to cancer patients and their families. $50 makes sure there’s a cancer nurse available on 13 11 20 to offer information and support to callers.
“This year, we’re celebrating the unique cancer support services that Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea helps fund each year across the region. Whether it’s Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 Information and Support service or the practical transport and financial assistance for patients having treatment, every dollar raised at the morning tea events make a huge difference in the lives of local people living with cancer,” explained Mr Connell.
While today is the official date for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, registrations are still open to host for the remainder of the month and throughout June. Get involved in an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea by visiting www.biggestmorningtea.com.au or by calling 1300 65 65 85.
