Clarence Town overcame the mid-week disappointment of being demoted to D-Grade with a 52-16 win against Hexham.

Cobras coach Peter Maytom said the club was obviously disappointed to receive the news it had gone down from C-grade, but the players had responded admirably with a confidence boosting win.
“We would have liked the chance to redeem ourselves in C-grade after a few disappointing results, but it is what it is,” Maytom said.
“They wanted to put Woodberry up and we became the team that went down.
“As I said to the players, we can’t whinge about it as we played our way down there.
“But having said that it was great to see the smiles on their faces after walking off winners.”
Maytom said despite the scoreline, Hexham had performed well.
“We went good. We scored a fair few tries but I don’t think the score was a reflection of the difference between the two sides,” he said.
“Defence was an issue at times with both sides.
“We took advantage for the first time of mistakes from the opposition.
“It’s encouraging, we’ve been a bit frustrated with letting ourselves down with ball handling in previous games. We held the ball a bit better and we scored when we had an opportunity,” he said.
“We definitely have to tighten our defence up, but they were a reasonably side. We weren’t 30 points dominant.”
Maytom said Ben Bradley and Tom Rumbel were the best forwards.
“Ben punched holes in their line a few times and Tom was in second-row and he was pretty handy, making breaks on the edge of the rucks,” he said.
“Halfback Ben Trappel got our best back and players’ player. Jarod Rits played on the wing and gave the forwards great support with strong runs early in the tackle count.”
Rivers beat Pickers
Paterson River were big winners against the Maitland Pickers on Saturday running out 45-12 victors.
The Rivers ran in nine tries to two at Paterson Sportsground against a Pickers team which has yet to record a win this season after starting in B-grade.
The Pickers have been hit hard by injuries and as a feeder club for the Pickers’ Newcastle Rugby League team have had to juggle players.
