This proud rural event has been running for over 90 years and is always a winner.
“We market ourselves as a real country show,” committee president James Harris said.
“So many people get in the car and drive up here rather than go to the Royal [Easter Show].
“It’s so much less hassle and they get so much more out of it.”
A full program of show events, bar the campdraft, will go ahead at this year’s event, kicking off 8am both Friday and Saturday.
Friday activities include numerous ring events, the cattle dog trials and a variety of horse competitions.
Saturday is the main day for ring events, with the horses running through the day, including the show jumping.
“The fat catttle are on Saturday morning and the show dogs are always popular,” James said. This year we’ve got 420 entries in the show dogs.”
Once the horse events are over on the Saturday, there will be a few fun contests.
“The pig racing is action-packed,” James said.“The wife carrying events follow thereafter and then the final of the fence post splitting competition.
“Two blokes with chainsaws and logs, cutting them and splitting them into fence posts. Truly spectacular.”
The dog high jumps are always a crowd pleaser.
“They do it from a standing start and land in a ute so they don’t come down so hard,” James said.
“Every time the dog makes a jump, the bar goes up 10cm. Last year we had a cattle dog jumped 2.4m – all for $50 and a feed.”
In between features there will be lawn-mowing races.
Federal member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, and Michael Johnson will have a celebrity race-off.
Bull rides start about 4pm and end up around 7.30pm, followed by the demolition derby and then the fireworks at 8pm.
“The kids can go home at that stage and the adults can party on to the Col Finley Band,” James said.
“There’s free camping at the showground available and a courtesy bus if you need to head back into town.”
