This was largely a National Party initiative. The Nationals are presenting a more assertive profile in the post Baird/Grant era.
So is our merger off the table?
Clearly the answer is no; the only difference for us is that the NSW Government will not force a merger on us.
Whilst a forced merger is no longer going to happen the underlying issues in relation to financial viability of the Shire remain unresolved.
Currently the three likely options are to remain independent, merge with Maitland or merge with Port Stephens.
A lot of time and effort has already been spent researching and presenting the various scenarios. The arguments have been divisive and have stifled progress in the Shire.
The way forward will require participation, effort, patience, leadership and tolerance.
It will test our community.
Whatever the outcome, may it be one that sets us all on a good course for the future.
The Dungog Business Chamber has been a consistent advocate for the need for local government reform.
We acknowledge that effective and efficient local government is crucial to strong and growing business communities.
We look forward to understanding the detail of our Council’s plans for moving forward.
BUSINESS EXPO
Dungog Shire 2017 Business Expo is shaping up to be a fabulous afternoon.
The expo, which will be held at the James Theatre on March 4 from 1pm, is a great opportunity to meet the Shire’s business owners and other organisations. We have fantastic generous prizes and vouchers which you can win just by attending.
There will be food, drink and the chance to hear from a representative from Newcastle Airport about its plans for expansion.
The event is presented by the Chamber in conjunction with Dungog Shire Council and the Dungog Regional Tourism Inc. It is being sponsored by the NSW Department of Industry as part of “Back to Business Week”, and is a free event.
