The group, which started in 1996, is determined to carry on as an unaffiliated social group.
Group member Cheryl Maher said the group wanted to thank the community for its support over the years.
Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia and the Hunter is recognised as a high-risk region for the condition.
The Maitland group will also close after 11 years.
The Dungog group will hold its last meeting as a member of NSW Diabetes on August 30, but will continue to meet on the last Tuesday of every second month, at 7pm.
The group meets at Dungog Hospital Day Care Centre, in Dungog.
Anyone with diabetes is welcome to attend, and it is also open to those who care for people with the disease.
