The NSW State Emergency Service wants to know how communities respond to severe floods and storms in a bid to help communicate the risks of entering flood water.

“Flood deaths are preventable and the Service wants to understand why it is that people continue to drive or walk through flood waters despite the warnings,” NSW SES Community Engagement Manager Andrew Richards said.
“The research aims to prevent the loss of life by gaining a better understanding of how to encourage good decision-making prior to these weather events occurring.”
The new research project will focus on the parts of the Hunter that were hardest hit in the 2015 super storm. Mr Richards said the natural disaster was still fresh in residents’ minds.
“The launch of the project is timely and we are expecting a good response from community members who are willing to participate in the research,” he said.
“The research will be undertaken by a team of researchers from the University of Newcastle led by Dr Amanda Howard.’
