When Darcy Hopwood crossed the finish line after a 200 metre sprint across Bennett Park, he couldn’t wipe the smile from his face.

The eight-year-old St Joseph’s Primary School student enjoys running and had been looking forward to the school’s annual sports carnival, where everybody has a go at the age races and other events.
He said it was an opportunity to spend the day doing something he enjoyed. He was happy with every minute of the race.
“Running is my second favourite sport,” he said. “I sometimes do a lot of running.”
Darcy said it was important to secure a strong start in the race, but not to use up all of his energy straightaway.
“I don’t go fast straightaway, I wait a little bit, about half the lap,” he said. “Then I run as fast as I can.”
His friend Oisin Wade-Gallagher, 9, was close behind him in the 200 metre race and placed second.
“I liked the sprint when I ran 100 metres, it felt good,” Oisin said. “Running is my favourite sport, I think its a fun thing to do.”
