The purple and yellow display at Lara Aged Care and Creative Crafts and Fabrics caught the judge’s eye and landed the two businesses in equal first place, ahead of the other 18 entrants.
Davey and Olsen, Dungog Newsagency and Westpac Agency received a highly commended for their displays.
Relay for Life organisers Lyn Moseley and Margaret Jones presented Lara Aged Care lifestyle co-ordinator Annmaree Rooke and Creative Crafts and Fabrics owner Carol-Ann Cummings with the promotional trophy on Friday.
Lara Aged Care will show off the accolade first and then it will be passed onto Ms Cummings so she can display it in her shop.
Ms Moseley and Ms Jones said the two winners captured the Helping Hands theme perfectly.
The pair also praised the town for its strong support of the Dungog Relay for Life event, which was held in March and raised $35,000 for the NSW Cancer Council.
The Cancer Council had directed $5000 of the proceeds back to the Dungog community.
The money will help cancer patients in the area access free transport through Dungog Shire Palliative Care volunteers. The program will be launched in July.
“This year we included more children’s activities with giant games, decorating of hands to go in the garden of helping hands and a jumping castle. Many also became king or queen of relay, dressing up and having their photo taken on the purple throne,” Ms Moseley said.
Ms Moseley and Ms Jones would like to thank the businesses, organisations and schools that supported the event.
Ms Moseley said Clarence Town, Dungog and Glen William public schools, St Joseph’s Primary School, Joeys Early Learning Centre and Dungog Community Preschool all had a visit from relay mascot Dougal Bear and the committee before the event.
Various other fundraisers were held to boost funds including a fundraising night at Dungog Bowls, Sport and Recreation Club. Raffle tickets and Relay for Life merchandise were also sold to raise extra funds.
“Thank you to the businesses who supported relay through sponsorship, donations, goods, prizes, money and advertising,” Ms Moseley said.
“Thank you to the survivors, carers, walkers and their sponsors for being part of relay. Without you there would be no relay.”
Next year’s event will be held at Dungog Showground on March 25 and 26.
