The NDIS is a new way of providing support for people living with disability.
It’s a whole-of-life approach - a major reform of disability services in Australia, designed to provide the right support according to each person’s needs and goals.
The scheme replaces the old system of block funds going to the organisations that provide support.
Instead, eligible people are assessed and allocated funding on an individual basis.
The idea is that everyone’s support needs are different and that each person can exercise choice and control over which services and support they receive.
Neighbourcare's general manager Cherylin Brown said the organisation was looking forward to the roll out of the NDIS in Dungog.
“This is an opportunity for additional support staff to work in this area also,” she said.
“It is a very exciting time for us and means we can expand to provide additional support services in our area.
“It will be good for the Dungog area.
“It’s an opportunity for people with a disability to be more independent.
“They will have a choice of what support services they want to purchase from us and can be as independent as they wish.”
Participants will meet with a planner, complete their assessment and receive a personal NDIS plan.
Once their plan is agreed, the organisation works with the participant to develop the plan, ensuring they have choice and control over how it is delivered. No two plans are the same.
The services provided can evolve over time as the participant’s needs change.
The aim of NDIS, which was launched in the Hunter in 2013, is to deliver solutions that really work and to assist people to live their life to the fullest. A meeting to explain the new service will be held from 9.30am to 11.30am on Tuesday, May 31 at the Uniting Church Hall in Dowling Street Dungog.
