President of the management committee Cr Glenn Wall said while no formal ceremonies were held at Vacy, a considerable number of veterans and their families visited the new memorial and placed flowers and wreaths.
“The old memorial had suffered a severe amount of degradation since 2002 and with the support of Dungog Council, Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the Vacy Village Country Carnival committee and Federal Member for Paterson Bob Baldwin, the new structure was completed on time and on budget,” Cr Wall said.
“With only $12,000 to complete the project, the new memorial, new plaques and new flag pole, could not have been installed and completed without additional support from Chevalley Building Services and Phoenix Foundry.
“The project, as with the first memorial, has ultimately been a community project, with considerable emphasis regarding its merits coming from staff and students from Vacy Public School. The project had been ongoing over the past weeks and the community memorial continues to honour of all those who have served our country whether in war or peace.
“It continues to be my absolute honour and pleasure being involved with not only the sportsground management committee, but the greater community of Vacy.”
“I commended all those involved for ensuring the Anzac Day traditions and other commemorative services continue to have a rightful place to be held and that future generations still have a unique memorial that they can rightly be proud.”
