The Cobras overcame an early try and several repeated sets of defence on their own line to regain their composure and prove too good for the previously undefeated Bears.
First points of the game came in just the third minute when the Bears’ hooker dummied and scored next to the posts for a 6-0 lead.
However their joy was short lived as the Cobras hit back six minutes later with their own converted try through second rower Whaleboat to level the score at 6-all.
Claro went to the lead when Badior guided over a penalty goal in the fifteenth minute to give them a two point advantage at 8-6.
Soon after Claro extended their lead when Jack Alison scored under the posts. Badior again converted and the Cobras lead was now 14-6.
The Bears then had a mountain of possession on the Cobras tryline, in fact it was five repeat sets before the bears eventually broke the Claro line and brought them back to within four points when their halfback scored out wide to reduce the Cobras lead to 14-10.
Just before halftime the Cobras inflicted a heavy blow on the Kotara side when Papamau proved too strong to score a valuable try and leave the minor premiers in a bit of trouble at the break, down 18-10.
That trouble escalated for them in the fifth minute of the second half. Whaleboat finished a lovely passage of passing by scoring his second try of the match and the Cobras had now raced to a 24-10 lead.
Claro could feel the chance of victory just three minutes later when Alison again proved a handful and he too picked up his second try for the afternoon and extended the Cobras lead to 30-10.
Kotara hit back in the 55th minute through their five eight and with gaining momentum were mounting a mini comeback when they crossed again in the 65th minute to reduce the deficit to 30-20.
However the Cobras weren’t about to relinquish the chance of their first ever grand final win and over the last 15 minutes showed grit and determination to bring home the premiership that had eluded them for so long.
The final score remained at 30-20 in favour of the Cobras.
There a so many people along the way who are in some responsible for this premiership.
I’m sure during the days of celebration following the win they all will have been thanked.
To the town of supporters who were there to witness the win and followed the team all season the club and players know that you are the most loyal supporters ever.
