Chris James has been a volunteer at Dungog and District Neighbourcare for six years because he wanted to do something “worthwhile” with his life since retirement.

He is aware the organisation is in need of additional volunteers to support people in the community and is urging people to put their hand up.
“Years ago my wife did Meals on Wheels and she suggested I might like to do it too,” Mr James said.
“So I started delivering meals but then I was asked if I would like to drive clients to appointments.
“But I enjoy driving and the added benefits are the wonderful people you meet.
“I have learnt a lot about the history of the town and I have met some real characters.
“They certainly make the trips very interesting.
Neighbourcare manager Kerry Broad said there are a range of roles to be filled within the organisation.
“These range from delivery of Meals on Wheels, volunteer drivers, linen service, daycare, in the office and on buses,” Mrs Broad said.
“There is a role for every volunteer within the organisation as part of our local team.
“A police check is needed for all volunteers and at the moment there is a real backlog.
“Some people have applied to be volunteers but we are waiting for their police check to come back.
“We do still want them, but our hands are tied until we have the appropriate paperwork.”
Karen Hall has been a regular volunteer with Neighbourcare for some time now.
“I would like to express my respect and admiration for the staff and volunteers who provide this wonderful service to our local community,” she said.
“Volunteering for this organisation has been a very pleasant and rewarding experience for me and I would urge anyone who is in a position to give some time, to do so and become a part of this friendly and welcoming team.
“I think you will enjoy it, I know I have.”
Fay Morley has been with the organisation for 12 months because she enjoys meeting and helping people.
“Some of the benefits are learning about the rich history of Dungog and the surrounding area,” she said.
“It’s great to see the enjoyment on people’s faces as they talk about the things of the past.
“And to see people enjoying some independence by walking to the vehicle and getting in unaided is very heart-warming.”
John Birch is another volunteer who delivers meals and is a volunteer driver.
“It’s great for an active person who would like to be a bit more active,” he said.
“I like using my spare time doing something useful rather than just time-filling.
“Volunteering for Neighbourcare can lead you into a variety of roles, all providing help and support to people who need it and will value both your practical contribution and contact with you. “
