But if storm and flood-affected Dungog residents, and those from surrounding towns, did not get in touch with them soon, they would miss their opportunity to get help with cleaning up their homes and properties.
BlazeAid is a volunteer-based organisation that works with families and individuals in rural Australia after natural disasters such as fires and floods.
Craig Copping, the BlazeAid camp co-ordinator for the Dungog area, said 86 properties had registered for assistance in the past four weeks.
‘‘We’ve already completed 60 jobs,’’ Mr Copping said.
He said the BlazeAid camp was facing a two week life expectancy, based on the rates of jobs they had left with the man power they had, if more residents did not register for assistance.
Fences were BlazeAid’s forte, Mr Copping said.
Volunteers had helped pick up flattened fences, cleaned them up of flood and storm debris and repaired what they could.
On Friday one of BlazeAid’s crews - one of six made up of six people currently working in the area - had lifted a deer fence located on a property about 50 metres down the road from the golf club and patched it up so it could fulfil its purpose again.
‘‘We don’t take work off contractors,’’ Mr Copping said.
‘‘If the job is too big for us, we’ll advise the resident to get a contractor in.’’
While farms and fences were the volunteers’ priority that had not limited them from helping even in the littlest ways, like mowing a lawn.
Volunteers, who hailed from right across Australia and were often ‘‘grey haired nomads’’ hoping to help those in need, also made small repairs on homes.
‘‘If there was someone in town with flood or storm damage we’re only too happy to help,’’ Mr Copping said.
‘‘The main thing is we need is the work.
‘‘We want to help people.
‘‘No job is too small if they [residents] want help.’’
